英語は文系理系を問わず、ほとんどすべての大学受験において必要となる科目です。また、英語に関する大学受験のための勉強法は千差万別です。しかし、英語力を支えるものとして、英単語や英熟語の知識は必要不可欠であり、大学受験の英語の問題においても同様のことが言えます。
このコーナーでは、大学受験に必要な英熟語の新作問題を月に一度掲載しています。当会で英語の指導を担当する講師からの出題です。なお、解答は問題が掲載された日から1週間後に掲載いたします。

1． pass

（彼は日本人として通用するくらい日本語をとても上手に話す。）
解説：pass for 「～として通用する」
なお，似た表現として， go by 「～という名で通る」などがあります。
2． account
In Japan, mountains and hills account for more than 70% of the land area.
（日本では，山地や丘陵が陸地の70パーセント以上を占める。）
解説：account for 「～を占める」
なお， account for には，「～の理由を説明する」などの意味もあります。
3． long
Our team has been losing games. We long for only one victory.
（僕らのチームはずっと試合に負けてる。僕らはたったひとつの勝利を待ちこがれているんだ。）
解説：long for「～を待ちこがれる」
同意の表現として， hope for などがあります。
4． apply
If you can’t pay the tuition fee, why don’t you apply for a scholarship?
（もし授業料を払えないなら，奨学金を申し込んだらどうですか。）
解説：apply for 「～を申し込む」
なお， apply to だと，「～に当てはまる」などの意味になります。
5． send
Oh, my God. Someone seems to have broken into my house. I must send for the police.
（まあたいへん。誰かが家に押し入ったみたい。警察を呼ばなくちゃ。）
解説：send for 「（人・助けなど）を呼ぶ」
なお， send for には，「～を取り寄せる」などの意味もあります。
6． stand
“What does the word “IT” stand for?” “Well, that is information technology.”
（「“IT”っていう言葉は何を表しているの」「ええとね，情報技術だよ」）
解説：stand for 「～を表す，～の略である」
なお， stand forには，「～を支持する」などの意味もあります。
7． take
She is always kind to everyone. You would take her for an angel or something.
（彼女はいつもみんなに優しい。あなたは彼女を天使か何かだと思ってしまうだろうよ。）
解説：take A for B 「AをBと思う，誤ってAをBだと思い込む」
同意の表現として， mistake A for B などがあります。
8． care
Your cup is empty. Would you care for another cup of coffee?
（あなたのコップはからになっています。もう一杯コーヒーを欲しいですか。）
解説：care for 「～を好む，～を欲する」
なお， care for には，「～の世話をする」などの意味もあります。
9． make

（もうすぐ終電の時間だったので，私たちは駅へ向かう事に決めた。）
解説：make for 「～に向かう」
同意の表現として， head for などがあります。また make for には，「～に役立つ」などの意味もあります。
10． answer

（私は彼をあなたの秘書として推薦します。私は彼の人柄を保証しますよ。）
